In 2011, RETNA painted a mural on the side of a building near the beach at 825 Berkeley Avenue in Santa Monica. The location carries its own atmosphere, distinct from downtown LA — the shifting coastal light transforms the work throughout the day. Black script on a white wall catches the afternoon sun and throws shadows across the letters. The piece marked an early chapter in the artist's mural career, when he was still discovering how his calligraphy worked at architectural scale. Looking back, that wall taught lessons that remain in use.
